Advent & December at Village

Waiting & Watching

Advent locates Christians between two horizons -  the Kingdom’s inauguration and its fulfillment. In Mary’s womb, in the union between divinity and humanity, the precarious nature of time met the stable rhythms of eternity. So in this new Christian year, we begin by joining our hearts together in anticipation of eternity breaking in through time and perfect love through a far-from-perfect situation. Jesus, the prophesied, long-awaited King and Judge, came wrinkled and wrapped in the drama of life as we know it. He felt it all. And in the muddle and mire, he brought hope, peace, joy and love. These are the themes of Advent. These are the flames of the salvation vigil we light waiting and watching, preparing our wandering and worried hearts to live in faith between the two horizons of salvation.

As part of the Advent season, we will be singing the Trisagion (instead of the Gloria). This liturgical song is an ancient hymn sung by the Church across ages and generations. The Greek phrase Trisagion translates as "Thrice Holy" -  in this hymn God is described as holy in three different qualities. You can listen to it here.

October Headlines

A Brief Note From The Pastor:

I hope your October is off to a great start. I'm so incredibly thankful for you and the fact that God has made you a part of this young fellowship seeking to glorify our God and advance the common good - where we live, worship, work and play.

I want to let you know about 2 important upcoming events:

First, we will be having an "Instructed Liturgy" on Sunday, October 22 during our 10am service. Have questions about the meaning and background of our Sunday worship? This deeper-dive into our forms and traditions of worship will be a spark for several meaningful discussion times we are planning for the season of Advent.

Second, we will be holding a Vision Night with Q&A, on Thursday, November 2 at 6:30pm. Nursery will be provided and a supervised art project will be available for children 3-10. We can't wait to share what it will look like for us, having been planted in Sans Souci, to begin the next season of becoming "rooted."

Every blessing,

ps. Here's a great resource I use through the week to complement the Sunday lectionary readings. Just click on the "Complementary" tab and you'll have daily readings that either reflect upon the former or anticipate the upcoming Sunday scripture readings.

PARENTS: No kids out front, please!

As you know, Old Buncombe Rd in front of the church is a high-traffic road. Please advise your children not to play in the front or to go around the front to get to the side yard. We will have a cone or flag up near the sidewalk as a visual aid to remind them. Until we've renovated and opened the other front entrance / exit nearest the green space, they will need to go around the back to get there.

WOMEN'S GATHERING - This Thursday at 6:30pm - Fellowship meal, discussion and prayer. Click here for more info and to RSVP!

MEN'S HOLY GRILL - Either Thursday, October 19 or 26th, at 7pm - TBD - We currently still need a host back yard fire pit or porch for this month! Reply to this email if you can host either the 19th or, as an alternate date, the 26th and we'll send out the confirmed date. VC will supply the food. We just need a host!

NOVEMBER NEWCOMER'S GATHERING - We haven't set a date for this yet, but there will definitely be one, keeping with our bi-monthly schedule. Stay tuned!

September Headlines

All the September events are right here on the calendar.
Here are some important headlines...

Confirmation - This Sunday

We will be confirming about 20 new members this Sunday and look forward to having Bishop David Bryan and his wife, Nancy, here with us. This is an important day for the new members, but also for the whole church! What's membership and confirmation all about? Click here.

Village Kids Ministry

We have a new children's ministry page on the website, with lots of great info about how we're training and caring for our children. Parents, you'll want to check it out!

And speaking of care, we have a new preschool coordinator! Here's a note from Corey and a brief bio:

"I’m Corey Sinclair, the new Pre-school Coordinator. I have been attending Village church for 9 months! I love getting to know the community here better, and I look forward to serving the pre-school ministry in this way. I am in charge of creating the pre-school schedule and making sure it is running smoothly. I’d love to chat if you have any questions or are interested in what we do here at Village Church for our pre-schoolers."

Corey, currently a teacher at Christ Church Episcopal School, graduated from Columbia International University (BS, Bible) in 2014, and began graduate school immediately following. Her time in children's ministry began when she was eight, helping her Mom teach two-year old Sunday school. She has loved investing in the lives of youth ever since! Corey grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania, but has been a SC resident for the past seven years. Ben, her husband since July of '16, is a Clemson, SC native, an educator and wonderful husband. Corey enjoys running, biking, and reading with her husband.

Alpha Course

Still interested in joining a group? They're open for one more week! Get more info and take the next step here.

Building News

We'll be signing the contract on the building in 3-4 weeks! All is going smoothly as we finalize a very detailed process. In the coming weeks, we'll be telling you more about how you can be involved in a holistic vision for our new home in Sans Souci that goes beyond buying and renovating this beautiful building to being a caring community with a tangible love for our neighborhood. Please continue to pray for wisdom and provision. If you're ready to take the next important step in investing in the life of our parish financially, you can do that here.

Men's Ministry Team

We're looking for 3-4 guys who would be willing to team up and take over the planning and leadership of our monthly gathering, Holy Grill, along with the occasional outings we've done in the past. Hey, you might even want to take it further than it's gone so far! Interested? Email Seth+

"Christian Identity in a Polarized World"

Our neighbor ministry, Soteria CDC, is hosting a course (3 weekends - October, February & May) that stimulates discussion and learning about living as Christians in relationship to other races, as citizens of the kingdom of God, and in knowing and caring for the marginalized in our communities. The course is being sponsored by the Beloved Community - a group of black and white Christians in Greenville who have developed deep relationships through hard conversations, meals together, and serving the needs of the poor. The group includes some Village Church folks! Get more info about the course here.

Village Church will be making partial scholarships available to those among us who are interested. Please contact Chris Schoen about securing a scholarship.

Irma Evacuation

We've had several inquiries from folks who may find themselves seeking refuge from Hurricane Irma in a few days. Do you have an extra bedroom?  Can you handle a family with a pet? Please contact Jill Smith and let her know what you have available. Thanks!
